Website Cost South Africa: What You'll Actually Pay

8 min read · Big Mood Agency

Website cost in South Africa runs from about R3,000 to R250,000, but almost every small and medium business lands in a much narrower band. A one-page site costs R2,500 to R6,000 (ours is R3,690). A professional small business website costs R8,000 to R15,000 (The Lead Engine is R11,500). A full multi-page build with copywriting costs R18,000 to R35,000 (Category Owner is R19,500). An e-commerce store starts around R24,500. Below is the full breakdown of what drives those numbers and what you should expect for your money.

Website cost South Africa: the pricing breakdown

The table below sets our published prices against the typical range you'll be quoted elsewhere in South Africa. Use it to sanity-check any quote you receive — if a quote sits far below the range, something is being skipped; far above, ask what technical work justifies it.

Payment terms matter as much as the sticker price. We work on 50% deposit and 50% on launch, or three equal monthly payments — The Lead Engine works out to roughly R3,835 a month over three months. Pay in full upfront and you take 5% off. All displayed prices are final.

What actually drives the cost

Number of pages. A 5-page brochure site is far cheaper than a 20-page service site, because every page needs design, copy, internal linking and on-page SEO. Page count is usually the single biggest lever on price.

Custom design versus template. A templated build is fast and cheap, but you share a layout with thousands of other businesses and you inherit whatever the template does badly. A custom design takes three to four times longer and is the main gap between a R9,500 site and a R19,500 site.

Functionality. A contact form is standard everywhere. Online payments, booking systems, member areas, multi-language and CRM integrations each add real development time — and they're the reason e-commerce starts higher.

Copywriting. If you write your own content you save money and slow the project down. If the agency writes it, expect R500 to R1,500 per page of good copy. Professional copywriting is included in Category Owner.

SEO depth. Basic on-page SEO should always be included. Keyword research, schema markup, blog architecture and an ongoing content plan are separate work — that's what our SEO retainers cover.

The hidden costs nobody quotes for

Hosting and maintenance. A website is software; it needs updates, backups, SSL renewal and security monitoring. Budget R750 to R2,000 a month. Skipping this is how sites get hacked or quietly break.

Your domain. A .co.za domain costs roughly R100 to R200 a year. Make sure it's registered in your name, not the agency's.

Content and images. Stock photography looks like stock photography. A half-day photo shoot pays for itself on a site meant to sell.

Changes after launch. Ask upfront what a content change costs. Our Always On Plus plan includes unlimited small content changes so you're never quoted for a paragraph edit.

Why cheap websites end up expensive

We rebuild a steady stream of bargain websites every year. The pattern is the same: slow load times, no mobile optimisation in a country where most traffic is mobile, no SEO structure so Google can't work out what the business does, and no clear next step so visitors leave without enquiring.

The maths is unkind. A R5,000 site that generates nothing for a year, followed by a R12,000 rebuild, costs more than the R12,000 build would have cost on day one — and you've lost twelve months of leads in between.

The opposite mistake is real too. Paying R60,000 for a brochure site because an agency has nice offices is just as wasteful. Match the spend to the job the site has to do.

What you should pay, honestly

If you're a South African small business that needs a professional presence — a proper multi-page site with custom design, mobile-first layouts, on-page SEO and a working lead funnel — the fair range is R9,500 to R19,500. That's The Lead Engine at R11,500 or Category Owner at R19,500.

If you just need to exist online this week, a one-pager at R3,690 does the job and can be upgraded later. If you're selling products, start at Store Launch — From R24,500.

Whatever you choose, insist on three things in writing: what you own at the end, what happens after launch, and what a change costs. An agency that won't put those in a quote is telling you something.
