5 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Clients

6 min read · Big Mood Agency

Most SA business owners don't lose leads on their website because of bad luck — they lose them because of five very specific, very common, very fixable problems. Here's how to spot each one, and what to actually do about it.

1. Your Site Loads Too Slowly

If your homepage takes longer than 3 seconds to load, more than 40% of visitors leave before seeing anything. On mobile data — which is most SA users — every second over 3 doubles the drop-off.

How to spot it: Run your URL through pagespeed.web.dev. If you score below 70 on mobile, you have a speed problem.

The fix: Compress images (use WebP), enable caching, drop unnecessary scripts, and move to better hosting. Most speed wins take a day of work but pay back forever.

2. It's Not Mobile-Friendly

In SA, over 70% of web traffic is mobile. If your site requires pinching, scrolling sideways, or tapping tiny buttons on a phone — you've lost the majority of your audience.

How to spot it: Open your site on your phone in airplane mode. If anything looks broken, that's broken for every visitor.

The fix: A proper mobile-first redesign. Not a 'mobile version' — a single site that adapts. This is non-negotiable for any SA business in 2025.

3. There's No Clear Call to Action

Visitors land on your homepage and... then what? If there's no obvious next step — call, WhatsApp, book, buy, enquire — most people just leave.

How to spot it: Without scrolling, ask yourself: 'What does this site want me to do next?' If the answer isn't obvious in 2 seconds, it isn't obvious.

The fix: One clear primary action above the fold on every page. A button that says exactly what happens next — 'Get a Free Quote', 'Book Now', 'WhatsApp Us'. Repeat it throughout the page.

4. You're Not on Google

Type your business name and location into Google. Then type what you do plus your suburb. If you don't show up on page one for either, your website is invisible to most of your potential customers.

How to spot it: Search '[your service] [your suburb]' in incognito mode. Where are you?

The fix: Set up Google Business Profile properly, add basic on-page SEO (title tags, meta descriptions, headings), get listed on SA business directories, and start collecting reviews. Local SEO results come in 60-90 days.

5. It Looks Outdated

Design dates fast. A site that looked great in 2018 looks tired in 2025 — and visitors subconsciously assume your business is tired too. First impressions are formed in 0.05 seconds.

How to spot it: Compare your site to your three biggest competitors. Does yours look modern or old? Be honest.

The fix: A full redesign is usually the answer. Don't patch — modern web standards (typography, spacing, motion, mobile) compound, and the difference between an old site and a current one is enormous for trust.

Doing One of These Won't Fix Your Website

Most SA business websites have all five of these problems at once. Fixing one helps a little. Fixing all five typically doubles or triples enquiries within 60 days.
