Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google
If you're a Cape Town plumber and you type 'plumber Cape Town' into Google and don't see your business — there's a reason. Probably five of them. Here's exactly what Google looks at, and how SA businesses can fix each one without spending a fortune.
1. Your Google Business Profile Isn't Set Up Properly
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single biggest factor in local SA search. If yours doesn't exist, isn't verified, or is half-empty, you won't appear in the Maps pack — and the Maps pack is where 70% of clicks happen for local searches.
Fix: Go to google.com/business, claim or create your profile, verify it (Google will post you a card), then fill out every field. Category, services, hours, photos, posts. Update weekly. Ask happy clients for reviews. This alone moves more rankings than almost anything else.
2. Your On-Page SEO Is Missing or Wrong
Every page on your site needs a unique title tag, meta description, H1 heading and content that mentions what you do and where you do it. Google can't rank you for 'plumber Cape Town' if those words don't appear naturally on your site.
Fix: For each service page, write a title like 'Emergency Plumber Cape Town | Your Business Name'. Use one H1 with the keyword. Write 500+ words of genuine content. Don't keyword-stuff — Google penalises it. Just be specific and useful.
3. You Have No Backlinks
Google trusts websites that other websites link to. If yours has zero or near-zero links pointing at it, you'll rank below any competitor that has any. This is especially harsh for new SA business sites.
Fix: Get listed on every SA business directory that matches your industry — Brabys, Snupit, Yellow Pages SA, Cylex. Sponsor local events. Write guest posts for related SA blogs. Partner with non-competing businesses for cross-links. Quality over quantity — 10 real SA links beat 100 spam ones.
4. Your Local SEO Signals Are Weak
Beyond Google Business Profile, Google reads dozens of local signals — your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency across the web, citations on SA directories, location pages on your site, schema markup with your address.
Fix: Make sure your business name, address and phone number are written exactly the same way on every site that lists you. Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage. Create a dedicated 'Areas We Serve' page if you serve multiple suburbs. Mention local landmarks naturally in your content.
5. Your Site Is Slow or Broken on Mobile
Google now ranks based on the mobile version of your site, not desktop. If your mobile site is slow, broken or hard to use, your rankings get punished even if your desktop site is perfect.
Fix: Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev. Aim for 70+ on mobile. Compress images, drop heavy scripts, use proper hosting. Make sure tap targets are big enough, text is readable without zooming, and nothing breaks on a small screen.
How Long Does This All Take?
Local SEO results — appearing in the Maps pack for your suburb and primary service — typically show in 60 to 90 days of consistent work. National keywords for competitive industries can take 4 to 6 months.
But once you rank, you keep ranking. SEO is the most cost-effective long-term marketing channel for any SA business. The compounding is real.
